Shortly after arriving here 10 years ago Dr. Mitchell saw how badly the area needed truly affordable pet care and set up shop by offering low-cost pet neutering. He quickly saw that much more was needed, so he opened what is now the Copper Basin Vet Clinic and began providing low-cost vet services to the community. If there is one thing everyone knows around here, it's that Dr. Mitchell will take care of your pet whether you can pay him or not. This customer review sums up the community's feeling about Dr. Mitchell very well:
Words are inadequate to describe the eagerness to provide prompt care for my 11 year Bichon Frise who needed emergency removal of a large cyst over his left eye. Dr. Mitchell and his staff moved quickly and skillfully to give my dog, BJ, amazing care.
What can you say about a veterinary practice where 1: no appointments are necessary - just come in with your pets, 2: the doctor calls you back when you leave a message 3: the fees are beyond being more than reasonable and they don't hassle you for payment,4: the staff are just flat out pleasant and helpful in every way and 5: they have some of the greatest office pets roaming around welcoming you to their home.
Oh, deer
To say that Dr. Mitchell's heart is in the right place would be an understatement. Which is why many in the community were shocked when the Georgia Department of Natural Resources served a search warrant on Dr. Mitchell's home, took two deer that were in his pasture, shot them in the face and then issued a warrant for Dr. Mitchell's arrest. According to Dr. Mitchell:This doe had been rehab by [name redacted] and myself. She had a permit and I was sub-permitted under her. The deer stayed at my place for 7 years. She would leave for periods of time and then return. Have babies, raise them, and then they would leave and she would come back alone. She was called sugar. Very docile and sweet. She had 3 different sets of babies. The last one had only 3 legs so she stayed around longer.
Not the fawn in question but just as cute |
VANLANDINGHAM and the DNR hid in the woods around my place for severals days, scaring my grandchild and family. They were dressed in black and would pop out for seconds and the hide again.
When we left for a vacation they executed a search warrant . My friend [name redacted] went over to see what the problem was after my helper called hysterical because they had threaten to shoot him. They immediately attacked him.
They brutally murdered the 3 legged fawn. The mother sugar walked up to them and was executed by DNR OFFICERS. They felt threatened.
In September, 2010 there was a big to-do when several rednecks shot a black bear out of season on a local WMA, orphaning two bear cubs. The rednecks brought the bear cubs to Dr. Mitchell, who immediately called State and Federal wildlife officials to let them know, but no one seemed interested. So Dr. Mitchell asked a friend, who is a retired law enforcement officer, for help. The friend contacted someone at DNR, who sent Sgt. Vanlandingham and Cpl. Cody Jones to Dr. Mitchell's clinic. Sgt. Vanlandingham and Cpl. Jones took the cubs from Dr. Mitchell's clinic and shot them. Apparently a bullet is the answer to many questions at DNR.
Being the civic-minded community activist that he is, Mitchell retaliated against the DNR's stupidity by publicly criticizing them on television. The Doc didn't hold back and told a Chattanooga TV station all about the ineptness of Sgt. Vanlandingham and his department.
So Doc thinks the deer are payback for publicly embarrassing Sgt. Vanlandingham and Cpl. Jones. Being a former law enforcement officer myself, I find it hard to believe that a public servant would stoop to revenge for being made to look like an idiot. Just kidding, I've seen so many people use their position of authority to promote their own personal agenda over the years that nothing surprises me anymore. Luckily for Mitchell, Judge Brenda Weaver and the rest of the judiciary around here has a well-tuned bullshit meter and hopes are high that she will see this case for what it really is - an attempt by someone who has had their pride stepped on to get back at a 69 year old retired veterinarian. Mitchell's arraignment is April 11, 2013. We'll be there, as will hundreds of other people that appreciate the contribution that Dr. Mitchell has made to this tiny community. Stay tuned!
This isn't a picture from the Mars Rover. This is what happens when you dump sulfuric acid on the land for 100 years. Copperhill, Tennessee ca. 1975. |
The DNR seems to be crooked everywhere. They claim it's for the protection of the animals, yet they kill them theirselves. My experiance tells me if DNR comes for any reason, be it a neigbors complaint or you calling them yourself, something will be found wrong and a fine will follow !!!
ReplyDeleteIt seems in this day and age that all Government agencies are crooked as heck. Killing this deer is horrible. I intend to notify every organization I can about the abuse this deer suffered as well as what this poor Vet has suffered.
ReplyDeleteIt would be nice if you would also post a picture of what Copperhill looks like now. After WWII my Dad helped plant trees which have grown back. The land is healing and it has a completely different look now. As for the DNR I reported what they did to Peta and several other organizations. The DNR is clearly in the wrong and should be investigated.
ReplyDeleteThere is no doubt that the area is much greener and much of the land has been reclaimed (as much as possible anyway). But the area remains as financially depressed as ever.
DeleteWell I spend quite a bit of time visiting which I have done my entire 57 years. I have quite a bit of family in the area. Copperhill/McCaysville and Blue Ridge have become wonderful tourist towns. It is a beautiful place. Much of the United States is depressed right now.
DeleteA man with a badge and a gun scares me far more than breaking down a two in the morning in the worst part of Atlanta.
ReplyDeleteIt is a shame that people in the CopperBasin area can't show a little respect and appreaciation for what Dr. Mitchell has done for this area, the person that caused this problem should be ran out of the area and he knows who he is, instead Dr. Mitchell has had to stand up against unfair treatment by county and city officials since coming to this area. I for one have a great deal of respect for Dr. Mitchell and appreaciate everything he has done for my pet care needs. As for him helping animals in distress and trying to give care, I have to say he is one of the most compassionate and caring Vets I've dealt with.
ReplyDeleteThe DNR should look at cases in a realistic way, a 3 legged deer has no chance in the wild (the DNR probable had venison that night), and how can you control and keep deer out of a pasture?, is every deer thats in someones pasture at risk of being killed by the DNR?, and is the landowner at risk of being arrested for a deer that gets in their pasture? I think there would be many people in jail/prison if that was the case.
Anyhow, I hope everyone that can will come out and support Dr. Mitchell, he is not the bad guy, his neighbor should keep his nose to himself and stop causing trouble in the area.
I believe Peta is now looking into this.
DeleteThe person that turned Doc in is from Florida and the reason he was turned in was because the neighbor wanted to keep wild deer and was told he couldn't unless he obtained a permit and had suitable housing and enough land for the animals to properly rehabilitate and also had to be inspected by the DNR and was subject to surprise inspections. Jealous because doc had the proper permits for wild animal rehab and the neighbor didn't, he turned the doc in and from there it turned into revenge on the part of the DNR's Vanlandingham and Jones. Ask almost any hunter in the Tri-State area about Jones and they will tell you he is one of those people that got a badge and a gun and decided his word would be undisputible law enforced at the point of a gun! I can testify for a fact that he gladly pulls his weapon to threaten you even if your legal and in the right! The scary thing is, when he pulls his weapon, it's cocked with his finger on the trigger the whole time! There is only 1 DNR officer that works in the Tri-State area that follows the rules and that is Eric Woods. ALL THE OTHERS have been caught several times breaking laws that they'd put us under the jail for but I guess they are above the law. Well, like Jones told my friend and I as he pointed his gun at my friends head for taking to long to get his hunting tags out, " I AM THE LAW BOY"! Those were his exact words. I love being called a boy by someone who is about 12 to 15 years younger than I am. Basically these DNR officers are just like most of the others in thinking their above the law. Doc has been a God send to us that is on a fixed income and I'd be willing to bet there will be hundreds if not thousands at the court house on the 11th! I know I will.
ReplyDeleteI appreciate the comments in support of Dr. Mitchell. I especially appreciated the remarks regarding past conduct by Jones and Vanlandingham. If the comments are truthful, these men must be dismissed from our DNR. I hope people with eye-witness testimony will stand ready to defend Dr. Mitchell if these flimsy charges are not dismissed. I think I will send a note of protest to DNR commissioner mark.williams@dnr.state.ga.us
ReplyDeleteAlso, to the Director of DNR GA Wildlife Resources Division
dan.forster@dnr.state.ga.us
Vanlandingham and Jones you both are a piece of shit and I intend on doing everything I can to run your sorry asses out of Fannin county. You have given DNR law enforcement a black eye.
ReplyDeleteNo good deed goes unpunished !
ReplyDeleteI have known Doc and his Daughter Robbie and most of his staff for many years. I have relocated to another State now but keep in close touch with all my friends in N GA who care for the area and the animals that live there.
ReplyDeleteDoc Mitchell is a blessing to the area and along with Jan Eaton and far to many other folks to mention, things have gotten better in the area. I am tempted to drive the 6 hrs to be there on the 11th to my support for Doc Mitchell and his staff not to mention the thousands of folks and animals the Doc has assisted (many times at no gain for himself). If the DNR is this bad then someone at a State and Federal Level needs to know about them..Get on line folks and email, write and phone till your fingers are sore to make sure the heat is turned up on these DNR Agents who think they are above the Law.. I have sold many, many cabins and pieces of property in that area of TN and it is a beautiful place to live and visit and NO ONE should allow the actions of two BAD apples spoil the image of N GA, NC and TN in the Mountains.
I guess the DNR has nothing better to do but kill animals. They should be ashamed of themselves. The charges need to be dropped and they should be arrested for animal cruelty and fired! Get a life DNR! I hope the ENTIRE county residents puts pressure on them ans they all show up in court in support of Dr. Mitchell.
ReplyDeleteI don't see Dr. Mitchell's name on the list for wildlife rehabilitators. Even if you are a sub-permittee, your name should appear on the list, unless they specifically requested it not be posted.

I live near Dr Mitchell (a great guy) and have 4 deer that come through my yard. Am I allowed under VanLandinghams and Jones interperation of their law to look at them or should we shoo them off to protect them from DNR and their big guns. Guys like this are the reason there is a gun problem in the USA. Idiots and guns do not mix
ReplyDeleteI must say I am very disappointed in what I am hearing about the reported deeds of Sgt. Vanlandingham and officer Jones. While I have never personally met Mr. Vanlandingham I have spoken to him many times over the past couple of decades about the poaching that goes on in my neighborhood only to get a cold shoulder.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand Cody Jones who is a fairly new graduate and new member of the DNR enforcement task force has been very helpful and due to his hard work we actually have at least a half dozen deer left after hunting season end for the first time in decades.
In defense of Cody I would say he is new to his job and following the lead of his mentors and while that does not condone his discretions against people and animals the public should look to his leadership for answers about how this agency and their employees operate.
I know the Dept. of Natural Resources has been short staffed due to budget cuts and they have a vast territory to cover but that does not give them the authority to abuse the power invested in them to enforce the law. It sounds like it is time for their boss to take a serious look at their employees and make some management decisions before an innocent human gets hurt or killed by this unethical behavior.
Take it from a yankee I have seen more corruption in this area then anywhere in the world.
ReplyDeletePolk County probly has the most corrupt police department of any county around.
So hearing something like this is no suprise if the cops get away with the shit they do why cant the dnr?
Please clean all law enforcement up around here trust me this shit wouldnt happen in the north the people would handle it themselves.
Dr.Mitchell is a very caring man and takes pride in caring for animals. I hope the DNR get what they deserve I support Dr. Mitchell all the way.
ReplyDeleteWas this case ever resolved? What was the outcome?
ReplyDeletei'm not sure of the exact outcome....i think doc got fined?? don't hold me to that....but he's still up and running.... he's worth his weight in gold!!
DeleteThanks for sharing this post. I am very interested in this topic. I would like to share my opinion on this. Bentleigh vet The advantages of those complementary therapies may be substantial, particularly in older cats. After getting your cat or kitten, schedule an early go to along with your vet. It will permit him (or her) to do an preliminary examination to get to know your cat. The sooner he learns about your cat, the better will probably be for him to detect issues later.
